In IPeople's case, each of the MEDITECH servers that house the Magic apps have a service on them that IPeople's DIRECT product "talks" to via an ODBC driver. [Another software] uses a dll that talks to Magic structure. So in summary, just as you suggest, I would think there is some Magic code involved somewhere, esp. since IPeople's founder was well versed in Magic programming. "We have implemented IPeople's Echo product and have used it to create a Data Repository. The main characteristic that we liked about IPeople's product over other DR solutions is it allows you to select which tables and fields you are going to populate in your DR. We found that other solutions would either not include all MEDITECH data elements that we wanted or they would store tables that we did not feel were necessary.
The Echo product is very easy to use. You essentially just have to click on the tables that you want to extract, define where you want to store the data, and schedule the extracts to run. To create an extract that runs efficiently, it does require that you have an understanding of MEDITECH's data structure and use of indexes. However, if you are unable to find the appropriate index, the IPeople staff is always willing to help.
We have several IPeople products, Echo, Direct, and several interfaces. The IPeople staff is great to work with. They are very knowledgeable and responsive."

"I've been ...using IPeople Direct and IPeople Connect now for 5 years and have considered it a great tool. It opens up the MEDITECH data to far more than just basic operational reporting. Unlike the administrative issues that come with the DR, IPeople Direct is much easier to manage and work with. For the most part, it follows the same framework as NPR, so if you have knowledge with NPR Reporting and MS Access, Excel and/or SQL Server, it is an easy transition to develop datasets and reports.
"...in my experience using tools like IPeople Direct, it is easier to download the data right out of MEDITECH into a SQL Server (or Access) database and query the data into the format that you're looking to produce. This process can be drastically reduced to minutes instead of days. An example I encountered was a Medical Records report that took 24 hours to summarize using NPR. I set up a scheduled IPeople Direct download of various tables nightly into SQL Server (which took 15 minutes). From that, I created a SQL Query to summarized the required information which took a mere 12 seconds to return the result they were looking for. It's amazing the difference when you're not having to deal with the restrictions that are present within NPR- mainly because NPR data structures are focused on operational activities, not wide-spread summarized reporting.
These tools can make a big difference for sites that have large and time consuming report issues; not to mention opening up new avenues for accessing and using the data out of MEDITECH."

"Our intent was to get a document imaging solution that would work seamlessly from our MEDITECH EMR. With an IPeople interface, we were able to accomplish that. When the user is in Meditech, IPeople Assist launches ImageNow from Perceptive Software and logs the user in. When analysts assign tasks in ImageNow, the IPeople Assist tool bar blinks to alert physicians so they can electronically sign documents and answer coding questions. IPeople also interfaces the document imaging deficiency back to MEDITECH. The deficiency is assigned and cleared in ImageNow, IPeople then relays to MEDITECH the updated status.
IPeople has been great to work with and their application even works in Windows 7. Without IPeople, our document imaging solution would not have had the level of seamless integration that we required. IPeople made all of this possible."
